A major headache for any computer user is when problems appear with the PC’s software. This covers a range of issues including the operating system, and other applications such as Microsoft Office etc.
Software issues may cause the following symptoms:
- Your computer is extremely slow, and keeps crashing
- Random freezes
- Blue Screens of Death (when the computer shows a random blue screen because it encountered a problem, and needs to shut down – usually an error code is displayed)
However, these problems may also indicate hardware failure, and an extensive diagnosis will be required to correctly diagnose the fault in some cases.
The range of problems that can occur due to software related issues is extensive. Therefore, summarised below are some of the most common software related issues GY Computing comes up against.
Your computer is slow, and not performing as well as it used to
A slow computer is an annoyance for any user and is a normal occurrence over time. There are multiple reasons that this happens, with some examples being junk file build up, an increasing number of programs utilising the computer’s hardware resources, and fragmentation of the hard drive, which is when files get scattered across the drive (This is where it starts to get confusing!). A popular service amongst previous customers has been our “Clean Up and Optimise” service. Using our recommended software, GY Computing will aim to speed up your computer as much as possible and provide you with the necessary software to do this yourself in future. The service includes the removal of junk files, getting rid of unnecessary programs (and disabling ones from starting at start up), fixing problems with the computer’s registry system, and a deep defragmentation of your hard disk (provided you don’t have an SSD drive which can’t be defragged!). In most cases, this results in a significant speed increase.
Windows’s fails to start
Potentially, this can be due to a corruption with files that Window’s uses to boot your machine. However, there is also a host of other reasons such as software/hardware changes. The end result is that you cannot access your files and are unable to use the computer. GY Computing offer data recovery (if required) in this case to attempt to recover your files and will restore your operating system. Sometimes, this may result in the installation of Windows where all other methods have failed. In more severe cases, Windows may not start due to a failed component, such as the hard drive.
Windows is unable to install updates
This is bad news, as the computer relies on updates from Microsoft, and other vendors, to keep your computer’s performance stable, and ensure your computer is secure against the latest Malware infections. If Windows Update is sticking, or failing to install certain updates, this may need to be reset.
In terms of upgrades, we can provide advice on your upgrade options e.g. if you are looking to increase your RAM capacity to boost speed. Common upgrades we carry out include upgrading the hard drive to an SSD, increasing your RAM capacity, installing new graphics cards, and installing new motherboards.
